Corbie Dorner Music

I love where I'm at...All of these things have lead me to Airdrie and my current role in life as a husband to my loving wife Andrea and a father to our 2 sons who provide us with endless hours of excitement. Although many evenings and weekends are filled with performances at Aussie Rules Piano Bar in Calgary and throughout Alberta, my days are busy with my role as the Music Program Director at Bert Church High School in Airdrie, AB.

I love music and I love teaching!

MY MUSICAL JOURNEY

I moved from Calgary to Medicine Hat, Alberta in 2007 to begin my teaching career. I was able to collaborate with some great musicians during my 5 years there. I recorded with blues artist Rob Hudec on his "Dandelion" album as well as travelled to perform with Johnny V at various Blues Festivals across Canada until 2012, including the Southside Shuffle in Port Credit, Ontario, in 2011. I enjoyed the honour of sharing the stage with Canadian guitar icon Jack Semple at the Tongue On The Post folk festival in Medicine Hat of January 2012. Because of increasing opportunities to perform in Calgary, I relocated my family to Airdrie in the summer of 2012 to ease the traveling schedule. This began in Spring of 2011 when I got the opportunity to perform in the dueling piano show at Aussie Rules in Calgary as a substitute. The opportunities to play there steadily increased and I have been the Piano Director since 2016. I still perform there regularly. I continue to work on material for my second album that accurately reflects my education experience while paying respect to the artists I've been fortunate enough to work with.

"I am a husband, a father, a teacher and a student. Born and raised in Taber, Alberta, I showed an interest and an ability for music at a very early age harmonizing with family and banging out melodies on pianos belonging to family friends. By the age of 4 I was taking piano lessons in a local church hall and through many twists and turns I am still singing and playing away."

From one side of Canada to the other as a performer and as a student, first, touring around western Canada in a bus with a country band that opened for such notable artists as Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Jason McCoy, Chris LeDoux, The Bellamy Brothers and the Good Brothers.

I went on to study jazz piano at Grant MacEwan College in Edmonton. After Edmonton I transferred to the renowned St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia where I completed a Bachelors in Music degree in Jazz Studies.

I have had the privilege of learning and playing many various musical genres along the way. After St. FX I moved to Calgary where I was fortunate enough to play with band leader and saxophonist Mike Clark in groups featuring guitar legends such as Johnny V and Amos Garrett. I soon began playing regularly with Johnny V's own assorted groups giving me the opportunity to back up blues legend Sonny Rhodes and perform on a live CBC recording supporting Zora Young (Chicago Blues Diva) on her Calgary International Blues Festival performance in 2006. In 2015 I ventured to Memphis, Tennessee with the Mike Clark Band to take part in the International Blues Challenge. My work with Mike's group earned me the Calgary Blues Music Association's Keyboard Player of the Year that year and that came with a spot in the International Blues Festival that summer where I was blessed to perform on the main stage with some of the other category winners. We also got to close out the night as part of the Twilight Blues Series. Memorable times for certain.
